  • Question:-What are good project ideas for MLK day of service?
I am attempting to plan an event on MLK Day for a group of teenagers and adults. We don't want to have to coordinate with any other organization, so we're not looking to help out at a food pantry, etc. We would like to do something ourselves. If you have any ideas that might work well for a mixed group, I'd love to hear them!

Answer:-It's hard to organize a project without the help of an established organization, but here are some possible ideas...

Adopt a street/highway in your area and organize a clean-up
    Rake lawns for the elderly
    Peer tutoring
Community clean-up (you may want to contact the city about this one, but you could organize it yourselves with their permission)
    Teacher appreciation luncheon
Assemble Care packages for servicemen and women
Collect recycling if your area doesn't have curbside pickup
Collect books for donation to schools/library
Collect coats to give to Goodwill/other charitable organization
Collect things that animal shelters would need and then donate the items to the shelter (you should ask what they need beforehand; a good idea would be to set up in front of a store (like Petco), but make sure to ask permission)
    Adopt a Preschool
    Grafitti removal
Getting people to donate anything for a good cause

    etc.

I admire your initiative to try to start a service project.
  • Question:-Who would MLK and Malcom X have voted in the 2008 presidential elections?
If MLK and Malcolm X were alive today.

Who do they think they would have voted for in the 2008 presidential elections?

Answer:-Martin Luther King said some terrible things about the Republican Party ...

    for example:

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. "

shows you things havent changed that much.
  • Question:-How did MLK earn a living while working as an activist?
My daughter has recently learned to equate work with money and is learning about MLK at school around same time and has asked me a question I have no clue about! How did MLK earn a salary while working as an activist? Did he remain on the payroll at his church or did he receive financial support from others to do his work?

Answer:-Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the civil rights movement. He did draw a small salary from the church where he ministered. He and his family lived on a very tight budget. He was indeed a man who could walk the walk, rather than just talk the talk.
  • Question:-How do I get from Baltimore to Washington DC on MLK day?
I need to get from Baltimore to Washington, DC on Martin Luther King Day. Normally I believe the best way is on the MARC train but this does not appear to operate on MLK day. I could also go on Saturday rather than Monday. I am looking for the cheapest way to do it. Thanks.

Answer:-There is a metrobus (express) that connects BWI to the metro. It's just over $3 one way. Not super fast, you'd want Amtrak for that, but much much cheaper. Check out wmata.com. The site has a great trip planner, but be sure to plug in the dates too since MKL day would put metro on a holiday schedule.
  • Question:-Do you think that Obama has the right to invoke MLK tones of speech when he is giving speeches?
Do you think that he is trying to invoke passion among blacks on a subtle basis? I love MLK and I don't want anyone to think that they are the new MLK. Martin cannot be replaced by a junior senator, his background is totally different thant Obama. Growing up in Atlanta in the deep south is different than growing up in Chi-town and in Indonesia and Kenya.

Answer:-He is a politician. The closer election day gets, the more tactics they will use. Earlier on, their TV commercials revolved around how good THEY are, as we get closer, the commercials revolve around how bad THE OTHERS are. Of course Obama will play the "black" card, just as Hilary will play the "woman" card, etc., etc. In a loose race, with a clear winner, it wouldn't be an issue, but as things get tighter, they'll say and do whatever will get them elected. Kiss as many hands and shake as many babies as they can. Personally, I'm not really excited over any of them, but they can't do any more damage than King George has - hopefully one of them can clean up all the messes he's made. If I WAS in the "hot seat" and had to pick, I'd go with Hilary for prez, with Obama for vice prez. Hell, the Clinton years weren't too bad, and you know who was running the White House then - Bill was too busy chasing tail.
  • Question:-What can we do at work for the MLK day of service?
I work for a large company and we work the MLK day of service. The HR department has asked for suggestions on what we can DO. What can we do as a group that we would not have to leave our building to complete. Any Ideas?
thank you for the suggestions so far. I am really looking for volunteer suggestions. Ex. Last year we created blankets for children in the local hospital through Project Linus.

Answer:-You want your cake and eat it to. Have your company let you off. There a lot widows that need there roof shingled. There are 2nd graders that need mentoring. There are teachers that need help in the classroom. There are elderly that need grocery shopping done for them. There are poor churches that need painting inside so the people can worship.
  • Question:-How many times can I install Microsoft office with MLK OEM license?
I have a Microsoft office 2007 Home and Student with (MLK) OEM license and I was just wondering how many computers I can install the program into? Many thanks.

Answer:-Only 1. But you can go to Sun Microsystems and download a freeware office suite. It is found at this link. http://www.openoffice.org/ This can be loaded onto as many things as you would like and it is user friendly.
  • Question:-What are the politics behind relating the WSO and MLK?
Few Americans even know facts about MLK. He very much likely would not have been assassinated had he not have been with one of his many mistresses. Yet, he is viewed as so righteous as are the WSO. I doubt anyone reading this would like the WSO living in a public park near them.
Just what are the politics behind the scenes. I have my own idea but I wish to know how others feel.

    Answer:-FREEDOCUMENTARIES.ORG
  • Question:-What does MLK and Obama have to do with sports?
There must be some connection because ESPN has been constantly doing pieces about MLK and Obama. Is Obama MLK now? Is he Jesus? Is he leading the Democrats to the Super Bowl? What is ESPN trying to do here?
M O, Obama is the most athletic president ever?!?! Wasn't Gerald Ford a college football player at Michigan? Jeez, the legal of Obama grows. Wait until he walks on water tomorrow and brings back people from the dead.

Answer:-Well MLK DOES have something to do with Obama, in that MLK was trying to bring EQUAL rights to all. Obama has nothing to do with MLK and both have nothing to do with sports. To be honest I'm getting sick of hearing about Obama. I'm really sick of the whole he's the first black President thing too. If he wants to heal the nation, as he claims, then he wouldn't want to be considered black. Racism will never end if we acknowledge race, and that goes for ALL races.
  • Question:-Why do Conservatives who admire MLK Jr ignore his criticisms of capitalism?
MLK criticized capitalism as a racist system in speeches and his writings.

Why is that not a problem for today's conservatives?

Answer:-They think because he was a Registered Republican that it means that he was Conservative. He was Liberal and not Conservative. He voted for both Kennedy and Johnson, who were both Democrats who cut a deal with him for the Civil Rights Bill.
