alcatraz

  • Question:-Alcatraz....................?
    Is Alcatraz still used?

Answer:-If you mean the jail in in California then no it is not it's a museum type thing now you get a tour through the cells and he village pretty much the whole island its awsome you should go
  • Question:-Will Alcatraz tickets be available on the day I visit?
I notice they are sold out on line for the Alcatraz Tour. Does that mean they will be completely sold out (for the week actually), or they are just sold out on line, and will be available when I get there and buy them. I'm planning on getting there Monday, but I want to go on Tuesday.
Can I get them at the booth as a walk up?

Answer:-During the summer, yes - they're sold out. Of course, if someone cancels you may be in luck, but that's about your only chance.

If you want to go, then you might have to wait a while until someone cancels/doesn't show up (assuming no one else is there before you, in which case you may have to wait longer).
  • Question:-What are some Alcatraz books a teen might like?
I'm a teen that recently got interested in Alcatraz. Any suggestions for books a teen might like about Alcatraz. Any and all answers will be helpful to me.

  • Question:-How much would the ferry to Alcatraz cost?
Can you visit the prison site without being toured? Which route is the cheapest? Sausilito, Valejo? Here's what I want, my dad's visiting me in the bay area on this upcoming wednesday, we want to see Alcatraz, the cheapest way possible. Round trip of course.

Answer:-With the exception of the ranger-led night tours, Alcatraz is usually done as a self-guided tour. The audio tape is included in the ferry tickets to Alcatraz. You can choose to not listen to it, but you have to pay for it. Alcatraz costs $24.50 round-trip only (you're not allowed to stay on the island overnight).

Vallejo is $12.50 one-way. You should only take this one if you plan on doing the Six Flags theme park, however, as that's the one attraction in Vallejo (an otherwise non-descript suburb).

The Sausalito ferry is $7.50 one-way. It is the cheapest ferry ride. The town itself is nice. But to really appreciate the surrounding Marin Headlands, you should bring bikes onto the ferry.

  • Question:-Who was assigned to work in Alcatraz Prison? What decided whether you worked that day or not?
I'm doing a project on the history of Alcatraz Prisoners, and I'm almost done. I just need a little more information on their daily schedules. I already know the minute-by-minute schedule, I just need to know why some prisoners were required to work assignments, while others weren't. Help, please!

Answer:-Several reasons. Some prisoners were too risky to have work any where, so they just left them alone in their cell as much as possible. Others were looking for a chance at parole, so they volunteered to work. Others still were more or less on a system where they would be picked maybe say, every other day, while somebody else got picked the days in between.
  • Question:-What are some tips for visiting Alcatraz?
I'll be visiting in August. Should I go at night? Can you go during the day and stay until the night boat leaves? Interesting facts about Alcatraz? Hauntings? What to see while there? Thanks!

Answer:-I am a hotel concierge in San Francisco and I consistently help my guests visit Alcatraz. Yes, purchase your tickets in advance by going to www.blueandgoldfleet.com. They are the only authorized ferry service that lands on the island. The cost is $16.50 for the daytime, audio tour and $23.50 for the tours at night. DON'T pay any more than that.
  • Question:-How long does it take to get hypothermia in the waters by alcatraz in San Francisco?
I want to do a swim from alcatraz to land it is 1.5 miles and I am only 16 weighing 120.

Answer:-Swimming the waters around Alcatrez is something only experienced, trained swimmers should attempt. The water averages 55 degrees in June and is very treacherous and can be quite rough. Stage 1 hypothermia can set in within minutes and people have died within two hours of on-set. With a 6.5mm wetsuit and proper training you should be able to complete the ~1.5 mile swim without a problem. However it is not recommended that anyone attempt this swim without proper gear and training.

Alcatraz hosts various events throughtout the year such the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, the Alcatrez Challenege Aquathlon and Swim, the Alcatrez Invitational and the Alcatraz100 “Swim of the Centurions".

My suggestion is to contact your club or local swim team and start training. Get used to colder water, always swim open water with a buddy or spotter. Invest in a good wetsuit such as a Blue Seventy or Quintana Roo made specifically for swimming and multi-sport athletes. Chose a race that looks like fun and has a good history and check out the reports from those who have raced in the past for pointers.

You can do it but you have to be prepared!

    Good luck!
