Well, an American poet would probably be best so I recommend Googling the greats: Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost etc. Having read the Laura Riding poem, it's a great poem but I don't know if it totally fits the topic of helping others.
If you wanted a helping others poem with a bit of a difference, may I suggest 'Shovelling Snow With Buddha' by Billy Collins? It's a little bit off the wall but a great poem -- plus, Billy Collins is one of the greatest living US poets and a former poet laureate. Answer:-You should show some pictures of art by Salvador Dali. A lot of his art was inspired by his dreams, according to himself. He referred to them as hand painted dream images. If you need something more scientific, you can find some graphs showing the five stages of sleep, and point out that we dream in REM sleep. A graph will show how we have REM sleep every 90 minutes, and that each REM cycle last longer the longer you sleep.

He was intelligent and a great orator. His words are as important as what he stood for and how he said it. Every ounce of his being was in that speech and he lived as he spoke. He fought the fight for civil rights alongside all those that suffered. The fact that he was authentic and would do anything to make it happen is what makes it such a great speech.
"I may not get there with you...," he knew he would die because of his beliefs and he was not scared. That is powerful.

MLK made that very explicit in his speeches, and used Christian scripture to justify the obligation to actively work for human rights.
There were, of course, plenty of people who put in the time and hard work for reasons other than faith, but it's well-documented that the majority of civil rights workers who actively worked for King came from church groups and individual volunteers who felt compelled to live their faith. King derived his authority and leadership from that appeal to faith, speaking at countless churches to recruit people who would be asked to face violence to make a difference.
If you're going to put yourself in harm's way, against dogs, water cannon, nightsticks, KKK, and crowds of violent mouthbreathers, you'll need a powerful motivating force to sustain you and give you a sense of the moral obligation of taking action.

However, MLK Jr. used more passive means or through getting media attention, boycotting, sitting-in, and setting up marches. I am attempting to plan an event on MLK Day for a group of teenagers and adults. We don't want to have to coordinate with any other organization, so we're not looking to help out at a food pantry, etc. We would like to do something ourselves. If you have any ideas that might work well for a mixed group, I'd love to hear them!
Answer:-It's hard to organize a project without the help of an established organization, but here are some possible ideas...
Adopt a street/highway in your area and organize a clean-up
Rake lawns for the elderly
Peer tutoring
Community clean-up (you may want to contact the city about this one, but you could organize it yourselves with their permission)
Teacher appreciation luncheon
Assemble Care packages for servicemen and women
Collect recycling if your area doesn't have curbside pickup
Collect books for donation to schools/library
Collect coats to give to Goodwill/other charitable organization
Collect things that animal shelters would need and then donate the items to the shelter (you should ask what they need beforehand; a good idea would be to set up in front of a store (like Petco), but make sure to ask permission)

If you saw what I saw, and know what I know, about the civil rights riots in Selma and Montgomery, AL, you wouldn't have any respect for the man. He caused horrible things to happen to both blacks and whites; they are the people who suffered, not MLK, Jr.

Answer:-Both MLK Jr. and Malcom X, not Malcomb X, wanted more rights for African Americans. However, MLK Jr. used more passive means or through getting media attention, boycotting, sitting-in, and setting up marches. Malcolm X, on the other hand, mostly used violence against the whites to get what they want and he formed the group called the Black Panthers.
