sopa bill

  • Question:-What sort of consequences will happen if the SOPA bill passes?
If the SOPA bill ever comes into power and is now a new law what sort of things will happen afterward? How will people react to almost every site on the internet being blocked? How long do you think that this bill might last?

For me I give it a month or a year at most for it to last then it would be gone. What about you?

Answer:-Facebook, youtube, and other social media sites could be blocked. And nothing would stop other sites being blocked too. Each and every day we lose more and more of our rights. Freedom of speech and the press mean nothing to greedy self interested politicians.
  • Question:-What would happen to Steam if the SOPA Bill passes?
If the SOPA Bill passes in congress what do you think will happen to the videogame downloading site steam? WIll it be pulled down?

Answer:-Steam purchases licenses to distribute software and doesn't infringe any copyrights by doing so. It wouldn't be affected. However, Garrys Mod is the only exception. Since the Source SDK is technically open source, it is technically protected, BUT there is a HUGE community dedicated to doing things like uploading Halo skins, COD weapons, real looking soda machines and almost anything you can think of. That could throw a monkey wrench into Steam, but it will most likely result in Steam dropping support for 3rd party mods and using their crappy anti-cheat garbage to ensure you don't download anything infringing. As of right now, nothing looks bad, but they could find something considering how much power SOPA gives to big corps and the government.
  • Question:-What kind of harm can the SOPA Bill inflict?
I have recently heard about the SOPA bill that might pass tomorrow and if it does, people say the internt could be ruined. Does this mean that DeviantART could be affected by this? I don't want that site shut down because of it.

Answer:-Theoretically, any site that has ANY content that infringes on someone else's copyright could be blocked to U.S. internet users. Not simply given a notice to remove the content or suffer legal repercussions (which is basically what the DMCA laws do right now). Just blocked at the DNS level so that U.S. residents can't access it (well, they technically still could by accessing the IP address of the server, but the average user isn't going to go to that kind of hassle)

The bill is so vague that ANY site that contains user-generated content could potentially be shut down if someone makes a complaint. It doesn't have to go through the courts first, it doesn't have to be sent a notice of the violation first. SOPA just lets a government department say "shut off access to this domain".

This *potentially* means that sites like YouTube, Facebook, DeviantArt, Flickr, Twitter, and so one could be blocked in the U.S. But the real danger here is not to huge sites like those, but to smaller sites that can't afford teams of high-power lawyers. If SOPA passes, the internet is going to see a lot less innovation and social interaction, because a lot of webmasters won't be able to afford the potential legal costs.
  • Question:-If the SOPA bill is passed, how will it affect musicians on YouTube?
I'm a musician who posts videos on YouTube. I post a bunch of music ranging from originals to cover songs. As long as I am not monetizing off my cover songs, I cannot get in trouble. But if the SOPA bill is passed, could I be punished?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Will the SOPA bill pass now since its been delayed?
I am so confused about how things work in the Government, but do you guys thing that this SOPA bill will pass after the recess? Or will it get filibustered (or whatever, I heard) or vetoed?

Answer:-Here info and how to fight back!

  • Question:-When will we find out if the SOPA bill passes or not?
By now, I'm guessing nearly every internet user has heard of the SOPA (stop online piracy act) bill. I am curious as to when we will hear the results of whether it passes or not.

Will it be months? Up to a year? I have no idea myself - I appreciate any answers from people that do.

Answer:-There will be a hearing on it December 15th, they had previusly had a hearing where none of the bill's opponents were allowed to speak out
  • Question:-What is the SOPA (House Bill 3261)? And how will it affect the internet?
    Hello guys.
I was wondering that what if they passed the SOPA bill, what is this bill, and what will happen to the internet or anything else if they passed it? Sorry, I am just curious. Will I still have access to YouTube and Facebook after they pass the bill?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-what would happen if the SOPA bill passes?
I just read about it on wikipedia and im confused about it. Please answer these questions:

    1. What has wikipedia done wrong?
    2. If the bill passes would wikipedia be shutdown forever?
    3. Why does SOPA want to close them down?
    4. What would SOPA gain from this?
    5. What would this mean to internet users like me living outside the US. (i live in UK btw)

Answer:-1. What has wikipedia done wrong? It links to other websites and if those websites have copyright material anywhere on the site, even in the comments section, it can under SOPA be closed and so can Wikipedia. Wikipedia has pictures which are sometimes copyright protected. Therefore it can be shutdown.

    2. If the bill passes would wikipedia be shutdown forever? If a copyright holder complains about infringement the government can take control of wikipedia

    3. Why does SOPA want to close them down?
SOPA is a bill. It doesn't "want" to close anyone down. The government wants to be able to control the internet. They've been trying to pass these types of bills for over 10 years.

    4. What would SOPA gain from this?
Just another way to regulate/control free speech.

    5. What would this mean to internet users like me living outside the US
It just means they can close websites down in the US and attempt to close infringing websites internationally.
  • Question:-What will you do if the SOPA Bill Passes?
If the SOPA Bill Passes in congress what will you do after that?

    Answer:-Rant and rage
  • Question:-Would the Protect IP/SOPA bill be an okay topic for a feature article?
I have to write a feature article for L.A. Do you think the protect IP/SOPA bill thing would be an okay topic?

Answer:-Yes. I would like to read something about why this bill is considered evil by so many sensible people. To me the idea of prohibiting the use of copyrighted material by those who don't own the copyright is rather reasonable. I run a small press, and I would be furious if someone took our writers' work and posted it on YouTube as their own. That is theft! Until the recent popularity of YouTube and similar websites, using someone's copyrighted material without permission or compensation was illegal. That sounds logical to me, but many are opposing this law. If you could present both sides of this controversy, it would be a service to your readers. BTW, wish you would send me a copy - I'd really like to read it!

pipa

  • Question:-What is the closest instrument to the pipa?
The pipa is a chinese instrument heard in the openin of Incubus's "Aqueos Transmission." it's a real neat tune and I don't know what would soUnd like it. Any help?

Answer:-Koto is a similar-sounding instrument, but you can also just play the riff on guitar. (There are effects out there that'll make the guitar sound kind of like a sitar - that works well.)
  • Question:-What exactly is PIPA and SOPA trying to censor?
I don't have a full understanding of what the internet censorship protests are all about. Some places say you'd have to say goodbye to sites like Google and Wikipedia, even Craigslist has banners to stop PIPA and SOPA.

So what would happen if the web was censored? And most importantly, what would get censored?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Why is the media paying more attention to SOPA as opposed to PIPA?
The laws are very similar and SOPA is far less likely to be passed.

Is it possible that it has anything to do with the fact that SOPA is supported by more Republicans and PIPA is supported by more Democrats, or is this just a coincidence?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Can the effects of SOPA and PIPA spread to other countries?
    - Will the media companies behind SOPA and PIPA move on to other countries? I've already heard of Motion Pictures Association talking to the governments of other countries, discussing PIPA/SOPA-like legislations.
    - Will these countries really follow the footsteps of America, if SOPA/PIPA actually manages to pass in the USA?
    - Is SOPA/PIPA gonna shut down websites originating from the USA completely, or are they just gonna block them in America? Such that people from other countries would still be able to access them.

    Answer:-
  • Question:-What is the difference between SOPA and PIPA?
What are the differences between the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) that are currently being debated?
Is it only that SOPA is in the House and PIPA is in the Senate or are there other differences?

    Please and thank you :)

Answer:-There are a few differences, but both will kill the internet if they pass.

Here we can still fight this horrid thing.

  • Question:-Which companies will people boycott if PIPA passes?
According to someones answer, if it is true, the SOPA bill is dead. However the PIPA bill could still be passed. Which companies are people planning to boycott if PIPA passes? Or what are people doing now to ensure PIPA doesnt pass with SOPA?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Which political party is trying to pass the new anti-piracy bills SOPA and PIPA?
I've seen in the news that Congress is trying to pass anti-piracy legislation bills called PIPA and SOPA and a couple websites like wikipedia and google are opposing it by having blackouts. Is it Democrats or Republicans trying to get this through? Or half and half?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-How are the Sopa and Pipa bills good?
I already know plenty of reasons why it is bad but i want to understand why any one would want such a bill to pass. I will not counter you or anything i'm going to remain open minded. Can some one direct me to some Pro Sopa/Pipa sites?

Answer:-The whole aim of these bills is to protect the copyrights of the movie. music, etc industries. It is fairly common for foreign websites (eg, piratebay) to facilitate the sharing of these copyrighted materials, and as it stands, the US can do nothing about it. Something like SOPA or PIPA, however, all flaws aside, is intended to cut off traffic to these sites, in order to protect copyrighted material.
  • Question:-What are the pros and cons of SOPA and PIPA?
I hear that record labels, movie studios, etc are in favor of SOPA and PIPA but websites like Wikipedia are against it.

I don't really understand what they are, can someone enlighten me?

Answer:-I have heard a lot of arguments against SOPA but none in favor of it. But a lot of members of congress have taken stands in favor of it. If you take a look at the members of congress who are in favor of it and those that are against it, they don't line up along any political lines that I can see. For example, both Michelle Bachmann and Nancy Pelosi are against it. Those two can't be further apart in their political ideologies.

As far as I am concerned I am against it because it means more government regulation. We need less regulation not more.
  • Question:-Will SOPA and PIPA ensure the government will have total control of all mass media?
The government needs to prevent us from seeing what they are doing and total media control is to the benefit of a tyrannical government, because they need to control what is news that's 'fit to print'.

Since the government controls all of mainstream-media in the United States and the internet is the last place we can go to find what isn't reported, will SOPA and PIPA ensure that the government has total control of what we are allowed to read and think?

Answer:-That's what they are trying to do. Read about Cass Sunstein (sp?) obamas information czar. He wants to stop the people from questioning anything.

what is sopa

  • Question:-Can someone please sum up what SOPA really is and what it will do?
Okay! Well i know pretty much what SOPA is but i don't understand fully. I know that most websites are gonnna protest and shut down their websites for 24 hours.

But if i the law is passed what does that mean? Will it close down social networks like Facebook and Tumblr for shut down for good?
